The chef and founder, Jonathan Weiss, has a strong background in culinary arts and restaurant experience that spans more than 30 years. Weiss was born into a family of restauranteurs, which goes back three generations. He found his love for cooking at a young age when he began assisting with prep work for his grandfather’s restaurant when he was only five years old. By the age of eight, he was cooking dinners for his family, and his love and talent for cooking continued to develop. He attended California State Polytechnic University, Pomona to pursue a degree in Hotel, Travel, and Restaurant Management, and became the first Deaf person to graduate from the program. Since then, Weiss has had the opportunity to work with several world renowned chefs, including Wolfgang Puck and Julia Child. After opening the catering side of Big Mango with much success, he added the Big Mango Cafe in 2012. Weiss currently has nine employees, in addition to two Deaf volunteers that he is training. Big Mango Cafe and Jonathan Weiss were also recently featured on DeafNation’s “No Barriers” with Joel Barrish.
